ESO Stroke Unit or Stroke Centre certification committee

Dr Safouris completed his medical studies in 2003 in the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Greece, completed his neurology residency in Thessaloniki, Greece and Brussels, Belgium in 2012, and received his PhD in 2019 from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Greece, after defending his thesis “Statin pretreatment and microembolic signal detection by transcranial doppler in the acute phase of anterior circulation atherosclerotic ischemic stroke”.

He currently serves as a member of the Stroke Unit Accreditation Committee of the European Stroke Organisation (ESO) and has been working with the Angels Initiative to enhance collaboration with the ESO. D Safouris works in the ESO-accredited stroke unit of Metropolitan Hospital, Piraeus, Greece, and is a scientific associate of the 2nd Neurology Clinic of NKUA in the Attikon University Hospital. He  is undergoing training in endovascular procedures in the National Institute of Mental Health, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Semmelweis University, Department of Neurosurgery, Budapest, Hungary after receiving a grant from the Greek Neurological Society. 

His research interests include vascular neurology, stroke network development and endovascular treatment   in acute ischaemic stroke.

Dr. Safouris has co-authored 77 research papers appearing on Pubmed.
